Decisions, decisions …

What is a retreat?

A retreat is a type of holiday that gives you the space to relax in fairly quiet surroundings.  It’s different to other types of holiday.  It  gives you time and space to relax and do what you want at your own pace.

The experience differs on each retreat.  Some retreats cater for large numbers, whereas Happy Retreats is fairly intimate.  We cater for less than 12 people, so that we have more time for you.


How safe is Spain for a solo traveller?

According to GOV.UK, most visits to Spain are trouble free. However, although Spain is a safe country to visit, we recommend that you take some basic precautionary measures, such as securing your belongings and backing up important information with physcial copies.


Who are our retreats for?

We welcome solo travellers, couples, friends and families.

Happy Retreats is for anyone who wants to getaway from the everyday stresses and strains of life. Take the opportunity to step back, relax, contemplate and re-energise. Eat delicious food. Make new friends.


What types of retreat are available?

Due to the pressures of everyday life, most of us at some stage want the opportunity to get away from it all. 

We know that people de-stress and re-energise through different activities. At Happy Retreats you can enjoy anything from yoga and mindfulness to active holidays to discovering new cultures and places.

There are no constraints. You can enjoy self-guided or guided walking and cycling (we have mountain bikes on-site) on any retreat.  We can also arrange additional activities.


I am travelling solo and have never been on retreat before. What should I expect?

Firstly, you’re not on your own.  There’s been a significant increase in people wanting to travel solo in recent years.  However, we know you’re probably feeling a little anxious about the decision.

Secondly, we’ll do our utmost to make your journey and stay as smooth as possible.  We can arrange transfers from and to Alicante or Mucia International Airports. One of our team will be there to pick you up or drop you off.  You don’t have to worry about travelling alone whilst you’re in Spain.

Thirdly, you’ll be guaranteed a very warm welcome.  You’ll become part of our family.  We spend meal times together, so you’ll meet the team and other guests.  We’ll also make sure that you’re stay is memorable for all of the right reasons.

Finally, people who come on retreats are fairly like-minded.  Making new friends is fairly easy in this environment.  You will probably wonder what all the worry was about in the first place 🙂


How far away are the local amenities?

Although we’re set within a beautiful location in the countryside, we enjoy the best of both worlds.  Peace and quiet within the estate and facilities 2-3 km away.  You can choose to walk, cycle, or we can drop you off in the car. 


Do I have to share a bedroom?

Our bedrooms are all large twin rooms and our prices per person are on a sharing basis.  We will normally match you with a room-mate and it’s a great way of making new friends.

If you’d prefer not to share a room, then we can allocate a room for you (subject to availability), but an additional single person supplement will be payable.  Please contact us for rates.


So I'm sharing a room with a complete stranger - will I and my belongings be safe?

Retreats often attract like-minded people, therefore security risks are low. However, if you plan to bring any valuable items with you, we advise you store them safely in your padlocked suitcase.


Will I be sharing a bathroom?

If you would prefer a little more privacy, then there is the  opportunity to have an ensuite room on a single occupancy basis (for a supplementary charge).

Otherwise, you will be sharing a bathroom.  We have three large bathrooms in total, which all contain a bath with shower over.  One bathroom serves two people and two bathrooms serve a maximum of four people each. There’s lovely hot water throughout the day and we’ve found that guests normally use the facilities at different times.  On arrival you’ll be given your own towels to use throughout your stay, so don’t be too worried.


Before you arrive

Which airports are close to Happy Retreats?

We’re very lucky, we are served by Alicante and Murcia International (Corvera) Airports, both of which are under an hour’s drive – Murcia International is slightly nearer.


Can you arrange airport transfers?

We absolutely can from Alicante and Murcia International Airports.  Our round-trip transfer fee is 29€.  If you are considering a transfer from another location within an hour’s drive, please contact us for a fee rate.


What should I pack?

Our what to pack guide explains more about the seasons and temperatures in Spain and what we’d recommend for each.  But you don’t need to bring equipment such as yoga mats, we have them here for your use.


Do I have to participate in everything on the schedule?

Not at all.  This is your holiday, so you can do as much or as little as you like, which means you can stay in bed all day, if that helps you re-energise.  Although we would recommend getting out in the sun, it will help you feel much better 🙂


I have special dietary requirements, is that a problem?

No.  Our standard diet is vegetarian/vegan friendly, but if you have special requirements, such as gluten-free, then you can let us know on a form that we will send you before you arrive

Yoga, Mindfulness & Meditation

I'm new to yoga & meditation, am I ready to come on retreat?

All of our yoga and meditation classes are suitable for beginners and those who practise on a regular basis. 

The practises at Happy Retreats primarily focus on the restorative benefits of yoga, and poses are by ‘invitation only’, which means you have the option to choose how far you want to go into a pose. 

Our experienced teachers are there to help guide and support you through each pose, and we prefer you to enjoy the experience rather than comparing yourself with others in the group.

Can my partner join if they don't do yoga?

Yes absolutely, we have a range of other activities they can get involved with, or not, if they prefer to explore solo.


What are the benefits of yoga and meditation?

Yoga and meditation have been used as an alternative forms of exercise to keep the mind, body and spirit healthy and happy.

Practising yoga improves balance, endurance, flexibility, and strength, whilst meditation helps in keeping the mind focussed – it relieves stress and anxiety, and can strengthen your emotional resilience and immune system.

I'm not flexible.  Is yoga for me?

Yes, and you only need to take things at your own pace.  The great thing about yoga is that if you practise on a regular basis, you will become more flexible and gain more strength.  We’d really encourage you to try yoga, as it will really benefit you in the long term.

What is yoga?

Yoga is physical, mental, and spiritual practices that originate from ancient India. Yoga is one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophical traditions.

There is a broad variety of yoga and the modern form is usually based on Hatha yoga, which consists of postures (called asanas), but you will also experience a range of breathing and relaxation exercises, as well as meditation.


What is mindfulness and meditation?

Mindfulness or meditation is a mental state where you focus your awareness on the present moment.  

The practice mindfulness helps us to into our thoughts and what we are sensing in the present moment, rather than thinking about the past or imagining the future.

Mindfulness can be used as a therapeutic technique to help you calmly acknowledge and accept your feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations.

What should I expect in the arts & crafts retreat?

Our arts and craft retreats are for relaxation purposes only.  Unless otherwise stated there will be help and support on how to use certain techniques, but the facilitator is not specialist.  These retreats are for those of you who enjoy painting, drawing, and crafting in small friendly groups, rather than specialist art courses.

All materials are provided.


What other activities are available?

We’re really lucky as the Happy Retreat venue is set within fabulous 60-hectare private estate filled with nature. To find out more about our location, visit our info page here.

There are a variety of walks in the country and by the river, which you explore independently, or we will be happy to provide a guide.  

If you prefer cycling, then feel free to use our mountain bikes.  Again, we’d be happy to provide a guide, but if you’d prefer to enjoy cycling on your own – we can give you some cycle routes.

In addition, the estate also features a beautiful aquamarine pool, offering a cool relief from the sun. From the pool, you can experience exquisite views of the surrounding mountains, orange trees, and lush forest.


Are other excursions available?

We’re happy to arrange excursions, subject to numbers.   Below are some of the excursions you can choose from:

  • Bodega visit: we are located close to three wine regions of Jumilla, Yecla and Bullas, so if you fancy a trip to a bodega to learn about the history and try a few of the local wines (which are excellent), then this is for you.
  • Historical cities and culture: Murcia, Alicante and Cartagena are all within an hour’s drive (much less for Murcia).  These three cities have some fabulous history, excellent architecture and great cafes and bars. 
  • Day at the beach: Sometimes, even if we’re on a retreat, we like the option to visit the sea.  We have some great unspoilt beaches nearby and the weather really helps us, as it’s normally sun, sun, sun all the way!
  • River rafting: From personal experience, this is great fun and is located in the valley, so if you’d like to have some fun, we’d highly recommend this outing.
  • Balneario de Archena: is our nearest thermal spa (just across the river and a 5-minute drive), so if you fancy a dip in warm thermal waters, then this is probably for you.  

Unless you’re booked onto a retreat that includes one or more of these activities, then additional fees apply.  If there’s anything that isn’t listed that you fancy, please ask, and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
